Wireline Tool Trap

ROV operated flapper type tool trap

design, development and manufacturing of an ROV operated wireline tool trap with a secondary lock on ROV handle

Project Objective

Design, development and manufacturing of a an ROV operated flapper type of tool trap, utilizing the Excess technology of remote operated lock open check valve

Excess Engineering through an R&D project, supported by Trendsetter, has designed and developed an ROV operated flapper type tool trap. The purpose of the tool trap is to close wellbore to prevent the tool string to be dropped into well or dropped on the BOP valves.

There is a secondary lock on ROV handle to prevent the tool trap for unintentional closing. The flapper is operated by lifting or lowering the ROV handle. The flapper is connected to the ROV handle to allow the ROV to fully monitor if the tool trap is engaged.

Tool trap allows for wireline cable to pass. And internals are made smooth with large radius to prevent snagging.

Main features:

  • Tool trap can be closed with wire in hole

  • Main bodies machined from one solid block

  • Dual Seal philosophy

  • API 6A PSL3

The wireline tool trap is provided with Inconel clad in all seal areas where exposed to well fluid.

  • The project is financially supported by Trendsetter Engineering.

  • Design, development and manufacturing activities are performed by Excess Engineering

  • 2020-2021
